lyrics

We’re actors, playing parts
saying what we pretend to think
Pretending to be who we want to be
Putting on complicated costumes
of literary references and black pumps

we clean up good, silk tights, buttons ups
but we’re still monster underneath
with sad eyes and sharp teeth
and wringing, hopeful hands

up your skirt
down my pants
In a bar talking about writers
that we’ve never read
On your bed lying about being in love with each other
Each lying about being in love with others
saying that’s what keeps us apart

But when I have a handful of your inch long hair
that`s true, all the strength in me is real
If the rest of it`s a lie it doesn’t matter

we clean up good, silk tights, buttons ups
but we’re still monster underneath
with sad eyes and sharp teeth
and wringing, hopeful hands

You called me last night to say
“I dreamt of you last night.
We sat in a bar smoking cigarettes
discussing Keats and Kerouac,
we spent the night together.
In the morning you turned into a crane
and flew away.”

I can’t hope for your voice mail
when I’m hiding under diner tables, drunk
and I want to tell you I love you.
Because time zones make it midnight there
and here I’m too drunk to see.

we clean up good, silk tights, buttons ups
but we`re still monster underneath
with sad eyes and sharp teeth
and wringing, hopeful hands

It`s all over
you’re married in the suburbs now
So we tell the story how we want
We tell the story like every moment
is an inch of hair in my hands
As if it was anything more than the nothing it was.
